The Sustainable Agriculture Training – Nurturing Tomorrow’s Agricultural Guardians (SUSTAIN-AGE) initiative, launched in August 2022, is dedicated to fostering continuous improvements in food security, agricultural productivity, sustainable practices, reduction in poverty level, and the reduction of youth unemployment.
Over the past year, the initiative has successfully affianced over 150 youths in Nigeria, providing them with a conducive learning environment with essential practical equipment, expert trainers, and skilled staff to develop proficiency in practical agriculture and entrepreneurial skills across all agricultural value chains.
The success is evident in the comprehensive skill enhancement of its participants, who have achieved proficiency in practical agriculture, agri-preneurial skills, value addition, agricultural marketing, and research and development. This success is attributed to the following key areas of learning and training:
1. Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture
2. Greenhouse Construction and Management
3. Soilless/Hydroponics Farming Techniques
4. Good Agronomy Practices (GAP) and Crop Management
5. Integrated Pest Management Systems (IPM)
6. Business Management Skills and Financial Literacy
7. Introduction to Agro-Value Addition
8. Agricultural Marketing and Promotion Management
9. Mentorship and Practical Application
The initiative's success in training the participants is underscored by rigorous monitoring and mentoring, leading to tangible outcomes in the participants' skill development and proficiency. In the agricultural industry, the challenge of maintaining a reliable and skilled workforce has been exacerbated by the aging demographic of farmers and a lack of interest among the younger generation. The SUSTAIN-AGE (Sustainable Agriculture Training – Nurturing Tomorrow’s Agricultural Guardians) Initiative is strategically positioned to address this gap by equipping participants with modern agricultural skills, fostering innovation, and creating a pathway for them to seamlessly integrate into the Learn, Work, and Earn Initiative (LWEI) Phase 2.
Improving the Agricultural Workforce
i. Skill Enhancement: Through SUSTAIN-AGE, participants will acquire up-to-date knowledge in modern agricultural practices, entrepreneurship, and value chain management, making them valuable assets in the agricultural sector.
ii. Innovation Promotion: By instilling an innovation mindset and sustainability practices, SUSTAIN-AGE participants can introduce fresh perspectives and technological solutions, bridging the generational gap in agricultural operations.
Bridging the Gap
i. Knowledge Transfer: SUSTAIN-AGE participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced farmers, sharing new techniques, technologies, and best practices, thereby facilitating a smooth knowledge transfer between the older and younger generations.
ii. Mutual Learning: The initiative can facilitate mentorship programs where participants learn from the wisdom and experience of aging farmers while also sharing their insights on modern practices, creating a symbiotic relationship that benefits both parties.
Integration with LWEI Phase 2.
i. Seamless Transition: Participants of SUSTAIN-AGE will have the necessary skills and knowledge to seamlessly transition to LWEI Phase 2 as skilled agricultural labor/workforce, ready to contribute effectively to agricultural projects and initiatives.
ii. Better Opportunities: By completing SUSTAIN-AGE training, participants can leverage their enhanced capabilities to gain employment in LWEI Phase 2 with improved pay packages, working conditions, and opportunities for career advancement.
